Pacific Rising: 1995-2005

University of the Pacific
University of the Pacific Decade Report

Goals

In the 10 years since University of the Pacific president Donald DeRosa stepped into the role, the school’s endowment has increased 280%, applications have more than doubled, and SAT scores have grown 100 points.

The school wished to create a report that would showcase this transformation and serve as a foundation for future growth and fundraising.

Creative Approach

By putting accomplishments into context and letting results speak for themselves, we aimed at inspiring and inviting the reader to be a part of the magic, all while fitting the understated personality of DeRosa.

The report defined DeRosa’s leadership and the school’s transformation in the words of members of the community including an elder statesman who participated in hiring the President; an energetic student leader who conveyed personal growth outside of the classroom; an unusual faculty couple who illustrate Pacific’s unique community interaction.

The entire book was organized around Pacific’s mission statement. The school’s core values — superior, student-centered, learning experience, integrating, lasting achievement, responsible leadership — flowed from page to page as headlines. Each spread’s supporting content illustrated success in these areas.

Large-format photography featured each storyteller in context (location, campus, labs). A restrained color palette rooted the book in Pacific’s signature orange, while quadtone photography effects supplied more sophisticated notes.

Results

While it’s too soon to assess hard returns on the report, the soft returns have been positive. From Joe Brennan, Pacific’s executive director of marketing: “The Decade book ROCKS! The campus buzz is that this is the best publication we’ve ever done. I continue to value the relationship we have with Zehno, and look forward to our next project together!”
