Open Arms: Zehno reaches out to the community

Zehno firmly believes in giving back whenever possible. By investing in the organizations that have positive influences on the community, we too can contribute to the common good of making the world a nicer place.

To cite just one example: We’re enthusiastic supporters of New Orleans Outreach, a non-profit with a mission to improve the quality of public education by linking volunteers with staff and students through programs that respond to the particular needs of each school. Founded in 1993, the agency has provided direct support to New Orleans schools through its site management of various volunteer-driven programs.

Zehno’s close relationship with Outreach began in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when longtime friends Paulette Hurdlik, Zehno’s managing partner, and Outreach’s executive director, Claudia Barker, shared shelter from the storm at Hurdlik’s temporary home in Baton Rouge. Upon return to the city, Outreach learned their office at New Orleans Charter Middle School had been destroyed by floodwaters. Zehno had two extra offices; the Outreach family moved in December, 2005, and, a year later, the two groups continue to work in harmony.

In November, the Outreachers thanked the Zehnoids with an haute vegetarian luncheon catered by Chef Kaysey Hasslock of Liaison Catering. Together, the organizations broke goat-cheese covered bread and gave thanks for good friends, a dry hurricane season and the ability to make a difference.
