Going Green for the Holidays

What’s yellow and black and green all over?

An eco-friendly Zehno!

It’s the giving season, and Zehno’s giving back to the planet. Putting our cans and newspapers into the recycling bin at home is all well and good, but how can you bring your green efforts into the workplace? Here are 14 things you can do to have a green holiday season:

    Green Office Space

  1. You know the old adage: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Donate old stock books and paper-company promotions to schools to use for art projects (but be sure to clip out all of the...erm...more questionable imagery).
  2. Give away old color matching systems to young or amateur designers to use.
  3. When you upgrade, donate old computers, Palms, phones and other electronics to non-profits.
  4. Share magazine and newsletter subscriptions and use a routing system through the office.
  5. Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs, and don’t forget to turn off the lights when not in use.
  6. Green (Computer) Screens

  7. Move to a Web-based project management tool to cut down on the amount of paper used to track projects.
  8. Use a more paperless system for client proofing. Make PDFs with electronic stickies instead of printouts and faxes, and upload files to FTP sites rather than burning and shipping a CD.
  9. Turn on energy efficiency settings so you don’t use unnecessary electricity.
  10. Green Minds Think Alike

  11. Support vendors who have environmentally friendly habits. Earthcolor, one of Zehno’s favorite printers, uses renewable wind energy, which is a pure, endless and homegrown resource. Earthcolor has purchased 25,002,000 kilowatt-hours each year from wind farms across the nation. Every year, the estimated environmental benefit of this purchase is equivalent to planting more than 2.2 million trees or not driving more than 29 million miles.
  12. Green Transportation

  13. If you live close enough to work, skip the morning traffic and ride your bike or walk to the office. Carpool or walk to lunch at a favorite neighborhood restaurant.
  14. Go Green for the Holidays

  15. Shed the holiday pounds with the Global Warming Diet.
  16. Use local produce in your holiday feast to minimize transportation costs and support the local economy.
  17. It’s tempting to use paper plates and napkins, but save yourself some money (and save the Earth!) and put your treats on reusable dishes. And while you’re at it, wash the dishes with biodegradable, natural dish liquid.
  18. Repurpose old press sheets and stock-photo campaigns into gift wrap. Your friends and family will wonder where you found such original paper.

Giving back is easy. Adapt these good habits and you’ll be sure to have a happy new year.
